Every year, companies like Canon and Nikon introduce new models of camera technology that add features like 8K video recording and 30 fps shooting. But the batteries that power these cameras haven’t changed much in the mirrorless era.
Enter Chinese manufacturer Nitecore’s newly announced replacement for the Sony NP-FZ100.discoverer sony addict Then gizmo, the UFZ100 has a built-in USB-C port, so you don’t need to use a proprietary Sony power adapter to charge it. The battery also includes a handy LED indicator to notify you when the charge drops below 10%. The same LED will indicate when the UFZ100 is below half power, above 50% and finally fully charged, with a constant green light indicating final status. At 2,250mAh, it’s only slightly smaller than Sony’s 2,280mAh NP-FZ100, and it works with many of the company’s latest camera models, including the A6600 and A7 IV.
USB-C charging has been a standard feature on Sony cameras for several years, so you weren’t unable to live without the company’s proprietary power adapter before. But having a USB-C port on the battery does make things more convenient, since you don’t need to use a wall outlet. With enough cables, you can also more easily charge multiple batteries at the same time.
One thing we don’t yet know about the UFZ100 is its price. Third-party battery makers tend to price their products below Sony, Canon, and Nikon to entice consumers to buy theirs, but the addition of a USC-C port on the UFZ100 could make it more expensive.
