Last year, Google started showing Air Quality (AQI) data prominently to Nest Hub and other Smart Display users. You can now also search air quality on Google for detailed information.
A search for “air quality” in the US brings up a card with the same name. You can specify a city in your query to find data for locations other than your current location.
renew: In addition to the US and India, this data is also available for the Australian state of Victoria (EPA Victoria). At the same time, this city-level data can also be found by searching for “air pollution near me”.
In the US, this data is “from airnow.gov and PurpleAir” where you can “select a region” and provide key locations. There’s a map that follows the light and dark mode settings, with color-coded pins for the stations available in the area.
Below the map is a description of the US Air Quality Index (AQI) and a list of sites. Each entry can be expanded to get a textual description of the health status and to see when it was last updated as well as a specific provider.
If there aren’t enough sites, you can enable “Include Air Sensors”, but Google states that “sensor data may have unknown performance and inaccuracies”. You can’t zoom in on the map, so you have to rely on point colors.
This feature is available for the first time in india last november And rely on local partners. The U.S. launch appears to be a relatively recent one. It works on mobile and desktop web, as well as Google apps on Android and iOS.
This useful feature comes after Google Weather stopped showing air quality data in 2018. The next step is to incorporate AQI with the Weather app and its widgets on Android.
