Recent reports indicate that a bug in Google Messages is causing severe battery drain and overheating issues on Android devices. The bug occasionally kept the camera running after you used the viewfinder function in the accessories menu, resulting in increased usage.
The Attachments menu in the Google Messages app includes a handy option that lets you quickly capture and share images or videos. The option appears in the accessories menu as a live feed of the phone’s camera, and 9to5Google Presumably the bug keeps this live feed running even if you quit the Messages app.
Reddit User u/CozyMicrobe also revealed that after exiting the Messages app, Android 12’s camera usage indicator stayed on, confirming that the app continued to use the camera after it was closed. Google has yet to acknowledge the issue, so it may take a while for the company to roll out a fix. Thankfully, a simple workaround can provide you with some temporary relief. If you don’t use the viewfinder feature in Google Messages, you can simply deny the app permission to use your phone’s camera.
To do this, tap and hold on the Google Messages app icon to open the context menu and select Application Information options. On the next page, click permission options, and then click camera options.choose not allowed Disable camera access on the next screen and you’re done. Since Google Messages can no longer access your device’s camera, you shouldn’t experience battery drain and overheating issues on your device.
However, if you use the viewfinder feature in Google Messages, you’ll have to close the app from the recent apps menu every time you use the feature and wait for Google to roll out a fix. Alternatively, you can use an alternate texting app such as SMS Organizer or Textra. If you don’t like any of them, you can check out our list of the best texting apps on Android for more options.
