Sony plans to launch the revamped PlayStation Plus tier in the Americas on June 13, the company announced Friday. Sony is targeting a launch in Asia (excluding Japan) first on May 23, followed by a June 1 launch in Japan, June 13 in the Americas, and June 22 in Europe.
Sony first announced the new tiers in March, with premium options offering things like access to a range of games to download or stream and the ability to play classic PlayStation, PS2, PS3 and PSP games. (Unfortunately, if you want to play retro games, you’ll have to pay for the most expensive tiers.) When initially announced, Sony had said that these tiers would be available in Asia first in the “June time frame,” followed by This is followed by “North America, Europe and Rest of World”.
Here’s my colleague Tom Warren’s description of the PlayStation Plus tier when it was first released:
PlayStation Plus must-have — Includes multiplayer access, two monthly downloadable games, discounts, and cloud storage for game saves. Prices are $9.99 per month or $59.99 per year.
PlayStation Plus Extra — Includes everything in Plus Essential and access to a catalog of up to 400 PS4 or PS5 games. The price is $14.99 per month or $99.99 per year.
PlayStation Plus Premium — Includes all the benefits of Essential and Extra, plus an additional 340 games, including PS3 games that can be streamed and some original PlayStation, PS2 and PSP games. Limited-time game trials are also available. Prices are $17.99 per month or $119.99 per year.
Sony says that when the new tier launches, PlayStation Now, which offers a range of PS4, PS3 and PS2 that you can install or stream on PS5, PS4 or PC, “will no longer be available as a standalone service.”
