Sources have confirmed details of the new Assassin’s Creed VR game, which is called Assassin’s Creed Nexus. This title brings back not only fan-favorite assassins, including Ezio Auditore da Firenze, but also assassins from previous AC games. Ezio, Cassandra, Connor, and Haytham all appear in various levels.
The game has everything you’d expect from an Assassin’s Creed title, including stealth, pickpocketing, lockpicking, combat, climbing, and even a leap of faith.
Assassin’s Creed Nexus features 16 individual missions, complete with tutorials to let you master the game’s controls. While Nexus is a VR game, there are some differences from the standard Assassin’s Creed game, especially when it comes to movement.
Players can choose one of the two styles or a combination of the two, standard in VR games, by using a controller to simulate a joystick to move or teleport. Since stealth is one of the more important aspects of an Assassin’s Creed game, the teleporter comes with a soundbar that lets you know if you’re warning nearby enemies. Basically, the farther you teleport to the enemy, the less noise it makes.
For example, teleporting 10 feet behind an enemy makes less noise than teleporting 3 feet away. So it’s usually ideal to teleport a distance to avoid being detected by the sound, then use your controller to crouch at the enemy.
Assassin’s Creed Black Flag, picture; Assassinations and battles in Ubisoft games are what you’d expect from an Assassin’s Creed VR game, where assassinations are the main way to take down enemies. Hold the button and flick your wrist to extract the hidden blade, which you can then use to stab enemies. Guards assassinated in this way appear to be killed in one hit, but if they are warned, it will take several kills.
Sword combat is also included, but fairly standard for a VR game, with players wielding swords to attack and defend. It may take four to six swings to kill an enemy, but usually one blow to the head.
Lockpicking in the game appears to be a feature to extend the life of the mission, with some missions having several different opportunities to pick open chests and doors throughout the mission. The game is described as almost like a mini-game in a sense, but actively picking locked chests and doors leads you to rewards.
As mentioned, Leap of Faith is also in the game, and according to sources, it’s a great addition that every Assassin’s Creed fan will love. Standing in a T shape and dropping a pile of hay off a building is obviously a pretty cool experience (just make sure you don’t fall in your face in real life).
Overall, it looks like the Assassin’s Creed Nexus will be a pretty cool and immersive VR experience, and due to the similarities between the two games, it’s not hard to see how the previously announced Splinter Cell VR game will play.
After hearing the game’s description and seeing it firsthand, it’s not hard to see which direction Ubisoft could take, the yet-to-be-announced Assassin’s Creed Infinite, first reported by Bloomberg. The title is rumored to have multiple historical settings, which seems to be somewhat similar to how Assassin’s Creed Nexus plays, but on a much smaller scale.
Announced in September 2020, Assassin’s Creed VR and Splinter Cell VR were both projects led by Ubisoft’s Red Storm Entertainment and supported by Ubisoft Dusseldorf, Ubisoft Mumbai, and Ubisoft Rethink.
According to sources, the Assassin’s Creed Nexus is expected to be released within the next 12 months.
