Samsung still has the only smartwatch running the new Wear OS 3 developed in partnership with Google. According to a new report, Samsung is gearing up to double down on the Galaxy Watch 5 series, which will include a new Wear OS skin, as well as do away with the “classic” design.
According to from Sam MobileSamsung is preparing the Galaxy Watch 5 series, which does not include the “classic” design of the series’ iconic rotating bezel.
Going back to the Gear series, Samsung first introduced the rotating bezel to great acclaim, and it has kept the feature for years since. The Galaxy Watch Active is the brand’s first foray into a smartwatch without the feature, followed by the Watch Active 2. Samsung went a step further with the bezel-less design on its Galaxy Watch 4, moving the rotating bezel to a “classic” design.
However, it’s unclear if Samsung is ready to ditch the rotating bezel entirely from its upcoming lineup. The Galaxy Watch 5 “Pro” has been rumored for a while now, and there’s a good chance the larger watch will still include the feature.
Regardless, though, this report makes it clear that Samsung will only offer two models later this year — the Galaxy Watch 5 and Galaxy Watch 5 Pro. The report also mentions that the standard Watch 5 will be available in two different size options, but the Pro may only offer one: possibly the large size, given recent battery leaks.
In addition to this, the report also mentions that Samsung will update its Wear OS 3 skin One UI Watch in the next generation. It’s no surprise, but it’s a sure bet that it won’t be a complete overhaul. Following a past pattern, Samsung has only made major software updates on its smartwatches every few years, often after revamping its Android skin.
