Apple’s current M1 chips are used in its MacBook, Mac, and iPad lines, so the company needs quite a few of these chips. By extension, that means anyone who enters Apple’s M1 chip supply chain can reap some serious financial gains.
Samsung, one of Apple’s suppliers, is producing FC-BGA substrates, which are essential for modern high-density chips with circuit connections. Of course, the South Korean tech giant also wants to be involved in the production of the M2 chip.
The so-called Samsung Electro-Mechanics unit is very close to a deal with Apple to produce the same FC-BGA substrate for the upcoming M2 chip. The report coincides with Samsung’s recent investment of more than $1 billion to build an FC-BGA production facility in Vietnam, and has already invested more than $241 million in its existing fab in South Korea.
