Dying Light 2’s road to release may have been rocky, but it looks like the project has paid off for developer Techland; the studio revealed that its zombie runner sequel has sold more than 5 million, a figure that reflects sales as of February 28 and is said to be growing “significantly” each month.
For comparison, we can take a look at the original version of Dying Light, which is also considered a huge hit from the studio. According to new figures released today by Techland, the game has now sold 20 million copies since its launch in 2015, a little over seven years ago, which means its follow-up is indeed off to a good start.
All of this bodes well for a healthy future for Dying Light 2 – which undoubtedly reassures Techland, as the developer has committed to 5 years of post-launch DLC support for the game. This commitment has already brought new armor, weapons, events and challenges to the game, with the first batch of post-launch story content scheduled to arrive this June.
Digital Foundry: Dying Light 2 PC Tech Review
Techland has only confirmed a total of two story DLC releases as part of its post-launch plans so far – along with more weapons, events, enemies, and even paid DLC – so it will be interesting to see how its roadmap continues to evolve Interesting Now, Dying Light 2 seems to have fallen straight into “provable hits” territory. Of course, there’s also the delayed Switch version, which is now coming later this year.
Dying Light 2 has been critically acclaimed since its release, even earning a Eurogamer Recommended badge when it launched in February. Martin Robinson said in his review that Techland’s “huge blockbuster is hampered by its own ambition and lack of innovation, but makes up for it with excellent parkour and combat.”
