Intel Alder Lake-HX in the HP Omen 17 Gaming Laptop
HP joins other laptop makers in now confirming that Intel’s 12th Gen Core Alder Lake-HX series will offer up to 16 cores.
The company now lists the Omen 17 2021 laptop with a Core i9-12900HX processor. The product page is clearly not going to go live so soon, as even the “Buy Now” button won’t offer any such deals. Not to mention that the subtitle mentions the “11th Gen Core” series.

However, the listing does confirm that the upcoming Core i9-12900HX processor, which can be boosted to 5.0 GHz, will have 16 cores and 24 threads. Even the Gigabyte AORUS 17X notebook leaked a few days ago did not mention the number of cores. So this is the first official confirmation that this part will indeed exceed 14 cores, the limit of the Alder Lake mobile series so far.
The Core i9-12900HX is a desktop-class CPU with 8 performance and 8 efficient cores. The 12th Gen Core H and P-series laptop processors released in January were limited to 6 Performance and 8 Efficient.

The updated Omen 17 is a high-end gaming laptop with DDR5-4800 memory and a GeForce RTX 3080 Ti 16GB graphics card based on the GA103 GPU. If it weren’t for the 1080p 144Hz screen, this might be the best-spec gaming laptop on the market.
With the introduction of Alder Lake-HX, Intel will be the first company to introduce a line of 16-core processors designed for laptops. However, this isn’t the first time we’ve gotten such a high core count on a mobile platform. We’ve seen attempts to roll out desktop CPUs for workstation systems with full desktop sockets and allow customers to choose high-performance CPUs as long as they’re limited to 65W. So, while it’s technically possible to buy a laptop with a Ryzen 9 5950X CPU, it won’t be as fast as a full-fledged desktop system.
