Potionomics seems to contain several things I would like to get from a video game. It has brewing potions, yes, that’s good. There is a shop, I like it very much. Then there’s the card-driven social system for bargaining with customers – perfect. Recettear meets potion craft meets sojourner signs? Animate with beautiful characters? gold.
Watch the new trailer below.
We’ve written about Potionomics a few times before, got a sneak peek at its character art in 2019, and released an initial trailer in 2020. It’s more than what I’ve mentioned above, though, as you can also hire heroes, customize your shop, and romance buddy vendors.
I am most interested in the bargaining system. It looks like you’ll be collecting cards from adventurers you meet around town, and each character has a deck of cards to choose from. Characters have names like “seed” and “shock factor,” and when played they affect the level of customer interest in your item. Discarding the “Jingle” card from the above card will cause the protagonist Sylvia to sing some ditty about the supplement she is trying to sell. joy.
I can’t deny that art is also part of the attraction. The characters are 3D and cartoony — a little bit Disney, a little bit Overwatch — but the 2D art that mixes potions and the store’s isometric cuts are also warm and welcoming. As much as I love Recettear, Potion Craft and Sojourner, none quite I’m itching for this kind of game, so I’m looking forward to what Potionomics will try. Potionomics is targeting a release later in 2022, and the release of this trailer coincides with its PAX debut. If you’d like more coverage from the ongoing show, Katharine and Liam have you covered with daily videos from the showroom, exclusively for supporters.
