While Apple has just launched all M1 chip variants and we’re still waiting for the first M2 computers, it appears that the Cupertino company is already working on a third-generation chip for the Mac and iPad. The M3 iMac is coming, here’s what we know.
in the latest version Open communication, Bloomberg Mark Gurman says an M3 version of the iMac is already in development. While it’s unclear what kind of advancement or technology this chip will use, it’s interesting to note that Apple has already aimed its entry-level processor at another iMac.
Currently, Gurman believes that Apple is working on several computers with M2 processors:
- The M2 chip used in the new MacBook Air, entry-level MacBook Pro and Mac mini;
- M2 Pro and M2 max chips for the new 14-inch MacBook Pro and 16-inch MacBook Pro;
- Dual M2 Ultra chips for Mac Pro.
The M2 chip could land as early as June, as the reporter suggested that Apple could be planning to release some new Macs in the coming months. Also, here’s what Gurman wrote about the M3 iMac:
Since then, I’ve heard that the M2 chip isn’t the only chip being tested inside Apple. If you’re waiting for a new iMac, I’ve heard that an M3 version of the desktop is already in the works — although I don’t think it’ll arrive until late next year at the earliest. Also, for those asking, I still think the iMac Pro is coming. Just not anytime soon.
9to5Mac It was also possible to confirm with independent sources that Apple is working on all of these M2 Macs, although it’s interesting that the next iMac could come later next year with only the M3 chip, skipping the M2 processor.
As of now, the only iMac available is the 24-inch model. Since the company has no plans to launch a larger iMac, it looks like this could be the version that gets the M3 processor in the future.
