Someone needs to remind Googlers to check their pockets before leaving the restaurant.
New leaked images and information shared with Android Central by an anonymous source show what appears to be an early version of Google’s yet-to-be-released Pixel Watch. The watch was apparently abandoned in an American restaurant for weeks.
The images show a device with a circular dial and two buttons surrounding a rotating physical crown. A pinpoint-sized hole, possibly used as a microphone or sensor, is located between the crown and one of the buttons. Meanwhile, the bottom of the device has what appears to be more sensors. The leaker claims the device “looks like metal, but feels like it’s coated in glass.”
In terms of size, a Redditor named tagtech414, who claims to be the same leaker who spoke to Android Central, said the device is about 0.5 inches thick and about 1.5 inches in diameter, roughly the same size as the Galaxy Watch. 46mm. Tagtech414 posted an image to verify his identity with the person who shared the image Android Central.
While the actual price point cannot be confidently guessed from the images provided, the device is clearly not cheap. In his Reddit thread, the alleged leaker claims that the device has an Apple Watch-style premium feel. In addition to the device itself, the images show a blue strap reminiscent of the Apple Watch’s Sport Band. Overall, the leaked images match previously leaked renders.
Anyone looking for more details on the software side will have to wait, though. The alleged leaker claims he tried to open the device but was unable to get past this grey Google icon below. Android Central Note that this may mean that the so-called device does not actually have an operating system. The device does not have a charger left, but Android Central Note that the device can be charged inside its case just like the Apple Watch.
Google didn’t immediately respond to Gizmodo’s request for comment on the authenticity of the device, but it’s worth noting that this isn’t actually the first time a major tech company employee has dropped a key piece of prototype hardware. Back in 2010, Gizmodo found a then-unreleased iPhone 4 in a Redwood City bar. There’s also a non-zero chance that Google intends to let the device go into the wild as a marketing gimmick.
The alleged leaker revealed some more interesting details on how he got his hands on the device on his Reddit Ask Me Anything post. tagtech414 said in his post that the device was first discovered by a friend of his who works as a bartender at a restaurant. The restaurant is said to have used the device for weeks, hoping its owner would come back and get it back, but apparently they never did. Tagtech414 said that the strap of the device was filmed separately from the device and packaged separately from the device itself. Perhaps most importantly, he’s trying to assure readers that he’s not an undercover Googler trying to speed up the Google Pixel hype.
“No, I don’t work for Google or any subsidiary and no one pays me to do this,” the Reddit user wrote. “Google if you’re reading this…I have a wedding coming up and a very large guest list. Feel free to listen to the crowd and put some letters moola on me :)”
