Apple has been using OLED screens on its iPhone for years, but not on its iPad. This could change as more rumors suggest that Apple will eventually use OLED screens for tablets. The first OLED iPads and MacBooks could come in 2024.
- The first iPads with an OLED screen are coming in 2024
- Chinese company BOE will provide Apple’s OLED screens
- OLED screens can also be used for new MacBooks
According to Korontada Chinese screen maker, BOE, will open a new production line of Chinese OLED screens for future iPad and MacBook. The BOE already offers Apple OLED displays for iPhones, but will also compete with two South Korean manufacturers, Samsung and LG, offering OLEDs for iPads.
A brighter, more effective OLED display
In addition to verifying the OLED screens on the iPad and MacBook, the BOE is also testing advanced technology called “dual-stack”, with two-layer release. This new system would have greater power when applied to smartphones and larger devices such as tablets and laptops, compared to conventional single-layer technology.

One of the biggest advantages of OLED dual-display displays is their efficiency. The BOE estimates that electricity consumption will be reduced by up to 30% on smartphones if used correctly. This will make the devices thinner as the batteries will suffice. Another advantage of this new screen technology: It will be brighter and therefore suitable for larger devices with larger screens.

It is uncertain whether this new technology will be available for iPad and MacBook by 2024. OLED dual technology is also not new. LG already offers this type of screen to car manufacturers but I have not yet seen it on smartphones and tablets.
