Google has announced the official codename for Android 14, internally calling the 2023 version the “upside-down cake.”
Every year, Google gives its latest Android major release a fun dessert-themed codename, and it continues in alphabetical order. In the past, these codenames were also the official names for each Android release, including memorable brandings like Android KitKat and Android Oreo.
As you might expect, things get a little confusing, and Android Q is a letter without an obvious choice for dessert. Google did finalize Queen’s Cake that year, but the public Android version names were changed to simple numbers.
Internally, however, Google continued the practice of choosing dessert names for each release during development. For example, Android 12 is called “Snow Cone,” while this fall’s Android 13 release is called “Tiramisu.”
In a new code change released to the Android Open Source Project, it has been revealed that Google’s internal codename for Android 14 — formerly “Android U” — is officially “Upside Down Cake.” In the code, this is stylized as a single word, “UpsideDownCake”.
An upside-down cake, if you haven’t had the pleasure of trying it, is a cake in which the decorations are placed on the bottom of the pan and the cake batter is poured on top. It’s then baked, and finally flipped – thus “upside down” – to put the decorations back on top. The most common upside-down cake forms include thick slices of pineapple and black cherries, but virtually anything can be used for decoration and flavoring.
Considering that there aren’t many desserts that start with the letter U, it’s no surprise that Google chose Upside Down Cake as the codename for Android 14. Still, it’s nice to see the codename confirmed, suggesting that development on Android 14 is clearly underway.
