Apple may eventually roll out its device registration service. Cupertino is reportedly already working on starting in 2022 or early next year. The service allows you to sign up for any Apple device for a monthly fee similar to services like iCloud.
- Customers can update their latest iPhone at any time, with a monthly payment
- The service could start in 2022 or 2023
Device registration services are not new to the mobile market, as we have seen with Google launching a Pixel Pass subscription service in the United States. It allows you to have Pixel connected to various Google services to get a monthly license. This is the same process that Apple is likely to apply.
A more affordable way to “own” an iPhone or Apple device
With the registration service, users will have the advantage of owning any Apple device. But that comes with a warning: you do not really have an iPhone or iPad. Apple still owns the rights to your device so it cannot sell or exchange any other trademark under the subscription service. Still, these devices will work with all networks similar to Pixel smartphones thanks to the Pixel Pass.
Another reason to choose a device registration service is that integrated services such as iCloud and Apple Music can be broken on the device. There is still no price for this service, so we will not know how much it will cost until it is officially available.
You may also be able to change your current device to a new format. But we do not know what the minimum cycle will be this or whether Apple will add additional costs to the previous upgrade or if it will be free for its customers.
Bloomberg Remember that the service is still in the planning stage and it is uncertain whether Apple will launch in 2022 or 2023. Apple may also abandon the project after the whole.
