However, before proceeding to discuss issues and solutions involving WhatsApp notifications on Apple Watch, it is important to state that:
- Notifications appear on Apple Watch or iPhone, but not both
- If your iPhone is unlocked, you’ll get notifications on it instead of your Apple Watch
- If your iPhone is locked or asleep, you’ll get a notification on your Apple Watch, unless it’s locked
- When a device is disconnected, notifications are sent to the iPhone, not the Apple Watch
- Notifications sent to your iPhone when your Apple Watch is locked or Do Not Disturb is on

Troubleshoot Receiving Notifications by Updating Your iPhone and Apple Watch
It’s not that you check to see if you’re connected to Wifi, but even the most geeks I know sometimes forget to check that their iPhone or Apple Watch is up to date. For example, as of this writing, iOS 16.2 is the latest version of the iPhone operating system. Meanwhile, the Apple Watch runs watchOS 9.1.
Not only that, make sure the WhatsApp app itself is up to date. If you’re a member of WhatsApp’s iOS beta program, check out the beta to see if the connection to the smartwatch might have been broken.
So, to rule out any issues involving outdated operating systems, follow these steps:
- On iPhone: meeting place Settings > General > Software Update
- On Apple Watch: go in Watch > General > Software Updates
- On Whatsapp: Start the application fromapp Store Then click on your avatar with Check if WhatsApp is on the list of upcoming auto-updates

Check if WhatsApp notifications are enabled on your Apple Watch
If both devices are up to date, then it’s time to move on to the WhatsApp notification setup on Apple Watch. This advice applies to virtually any app, but here we’ll focus on WhatsApp:
- On your iPhone, open theApple Watch App with make sure you are inLabel my watch
- then press Notice
- scroll down to options like my iphone > check Enabled notification switch for whatsapp.

Enable replies to incoming WhatsApp messages
I admit that the third method is more of a safety measure than an obligation. Enabling the option to reply directly to WhatsApp messages on your Apple Watch may trigger receiving WhatsApp messages on the watch. To do this, follow the tutorial below:
- On iPhone, go to Settings > Notifications > WhatsApp
- ensure option enable notifications Activated
- In the alert options, choose Show in notification center withlock screen (sound and badge are optional).

Finally, if none of that works, my next suggestion is a little more drastic: reset your Apple Watch, and try again. If that doesn’t work, I recommend resetting your iPhone. But before that, please backup your data in iCloud. If none of these work, please contact Apple’s Genius team, as one of your devices may be experiencing a specific hardware issue.
Another option is to use a third-party app, in which case our recommendation is to install the WhatChat 2 app:
