With all the apps we tend to run on our phones, there’s been a constant worry about whether the battery will last through the day — which doesn’t help when apps are misfires and running power-hungry features in the background.according to 9to5Googlea recent bug in the Google Messages app on Android phones caused the camera to run in the background — a great way to both heat up the phone and drain the battery.
The Google Messages app makes it easy to take photos and attach them to chat messages directly from the app.According to the article 9to5Google, the camera app will occasionally continue to run even if you’re not showing it on the screen. (This issue was also reported on the Pixel 6 Pro in a Reddit group.)
Using the camera to send an image via message (see bottom left) may keep the camera running.
If desired, you can deny Messages permission to use the camera.
We were unable to reproduce the issue. However, if you do find that your phone is unusually hot or the battery is draining very quickly, it probably doesn’t hurt to make sure your camera isn’t still running – or just swipe the Messages app out of the Recents view, which The application will be closed. You can also completely deny Messages permission to use your camera by going to Settings > Apps > Messages > Permissions > Camera and selecting “Don’t Allow”.
However, this may not be necessary. According to Google communications manager Scott Westover, the vulnerability has been identified and a fix is currently being rolled out to users.
