The latest update is just a joke

The Samsung Galaxy Watch4 and Watch4 Classic are two of our favorite smartwatches, and while they’ve enjoyed exclusive access to Wear OS 3 since their release last year, they’re missing another big piece of software—Google Assistant. Today, Verizon posted an update on its Galaxy Watch4 Classic support page, saying that a system update that includes Assistant support is now available — but Google says that, in fact, Assistant itself isn’t out yet.
Verizon says Google Assistant compatibility is rolling out in this latest update, although Google tells us that the Google Assistant feature isn’t yet on the watch. The update also includes a few other tweaks, including a new Smart Switch backup and restore process that should alleviate some of the apparently silly issues involved with moving the watch between phones, and a quicker way to measure body composition through certain Samsung Health notifications Way.

Earlier this year, Samsung said it still plans to offer Assistant support “in the coming months,” a notable omission from the otherwise great Watch4 lineup. Considering it’s only April, this particular promise could still be fulfilled – although we do wonder how long it took, considering the watch itself has been on the market since August 2021, and we’ve heard about Rumors of the Galaxy Watch5.
You can now download the update on the Watch4 or Watch4 Classic, but again, the apps your watch needs for Google Assistant functionality are still not available through the Play Store. We’ll probably hear more about it at Google I/O – which will start in a few weeks.
