With the launch of the first Google-made smartwatch seemingly imminent, the device now has a more explicit name thanks to a new trademark for “Pixel Watch.”
Google has been rumored to be planning to launch a Wear OS-based first-party smartwatch for several years now, and recent rumors suggest that the watch may finally be on the way. We’ve even seen renders and watch faces of the device, which has no official name so far. Even the most recent leaks refer to Google’s smartwatch as the “Pixel Rohan,” which is the company’s internal codename.
While it’s almost certain that Google will call their first-party Wear OS device the Pixel Watch, so far we haven’t had any confirmation — until today. In a new filing with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, Google has applied to trademark the term “Pixel Watch.” As you might expect, the trademark covers (in Hankhill’s words) smartwatches and smartwatch accessories.
The PIXEL WATCH™ trademark registration is intended to cover the category of smartwatches; cases suitable for storing smartwatches; wearable computers of a smartwatch nature; smartwatch straps; smartwatch straps.
While no other details about the device have been gleaned from the Pixel Watch trademark listing, it’s great to finally figure out what’s Google’s first smartwatch. Considering this is intended to be a de facto accessory for Pixel users, it makes perfect sense for Google to call it the Pixel Watch.
The next most likely opportunity for Google to release hardware is next month’s Google I/O developer event, which has previously been the venue for the likes of the Pixel 3a and Nest Hub Max. That said, there are still some regulatory steps between the Pixel Watch and its launch, as the smartwatch has yet to be spotted on the FCC or Bluetooth SIG’s listings.
So what do you think of the now-confirmed “Pixel Watch” name? Would you call it another name? Let us know in the comments.
