A bug in Google Messages can cause problems with the Messages and Camera apps running in the background.
first notice 9to5Google, a post on Reddit detailed issues with messaging and camera apps remaining open for hours long after use. This causes the phone to heat up and the battery drains quickly.
The problem seems to be the communication bridge between the message and the camera app. Messages lets users tap the camera icon to quickly take a photo and send it to someone. The bug in question seems to keep the bridge from closing, causing one or two apps to stay open for long periods of time.

Some users reported the problem every time they opened a message, even if they weren’t using the camera feature or sending a text. Some users had to manually close the Messages application to stop this behavior.
A short-term solution is to manually close the message after each use. A more permanent solution – at least until an official fix – is to go into the Messages app permissions settings and remove its access to the Camera app.
