The heat is here, and despite the super cool collaborators and editor’s frozen drinks in the fridge, kwgeek is no exception. So I scoured the web for tips on how to make my own air conditioner and came across a “hack for life”. So find out how the towels, fans and faucets you may have can help you make your own air conditioner.
As you may have noticed, half the world is currently affected by heat waves. While most kwgeek employees have subtly stayed remote, I rode my bike to the office this morning. We were expecting a particularly large package, and for that, someone had to be there. Unfortunately for me, the elevator just broke down today.

But that’s not that, because for my tutorial today, I set myself the goal of cooling down my desktop. For this, I found a trick online. Our colleagues at the Berlin Clippers even called it a “smart trick”. For this tutorial, all you need is a fan, a towel, and fairly cold water.
How to Make Your Own Temporary Air Conditioner
You can pretty much guess what to do if the heat gets your neurons low. The steps are very simple:
- Wet the towel with water so that it is damp but not dripping
- Use coat hooks, hangers, or other attachments to hang towels in front of the fan
- Turn on the fan
The towel should then release small droplets of water into the air, which should have a cooling effect. Of course, you can also connect everything. For example, I recently tested the Switchbot Bot, which can automatically turn off your fan when you fall asleep, for example.
Tested in the office for half an hour and was amazed at how well this DIY air conditioner works! The fan is pointed directly at me and the air is cool enough that I can start the oscillation function so I don’t get cool air all the time.
Have you tried this trick? If so, what was your experience? Let’s discuss it in the comments!
