The few psychopaths eagerly awaiting the vision of Meta’s grand virtual world may have to wait another decade, the company said at an event on Wednesday. In the meantime, Meta hopes a new and improved catalog of VR games can act as a gateway drug to get users used to their days by putting on a VR headset.
Speaking at the Meta Quest Gaming Showcase on Wednesday, Meta AR/VR executive producer Ruth Bram acknowledged that more work needs to be done on both the hardware and software components of the Metaverse. According to Bram, it could be five to ten years before the vision that Metaverse CEO Mark Zuckerberg and others awkwardly outlined last year could be fully realized.
“Gaming is how a lot of people get into the game [the metaverse] For the first time,” Bram said. “The game pioneered many of the principles that define our vision. A virtual three-dimensional space that enables people to connect in a whole new way. We believe that Metaverse will develop into the next evolution of next-generation Internet and social technology based on this. “
At Wednesday’s event, there were about a dozen games on display, ranging from typical shooters to narrative-based action-adventures and even world-building simulators. All games shown during the event are scheduled to be released next year.
