In MIUI 13, Xiaomi offers the ability to increase the RAM capacity of Xiaomi or Redmi smartphones. This RAM expansion feature should make the user experience smoother, especially when multitasking.
This feature of MIUI 13 specifically allows you to allocate part of the storage space (usually 3 GB) to the smartphone’s RAM.
With this virtual RAM, the idea is to make your Xiaomi smartphone handle tasks faster and more efficiently. This is especially useful for smartphones under $200 or under $300, which typically come with less RAM.

You can enable/disable this feature of MIUI 13 according to your needs. For this to work, you obviously need at least 3 GB of free storage space. Once activated, your smartphone will thus benefit from 3 GB of additional RAM.
However, on my Mi 12X, every time I activate/deactivate the smartphone, I have to restart it. As I’ve already explained the game modes that should improve game performance, the virtual RAM feature is not a panacea. If you have a slow smartphone, MIUI’s memory expansion feature won’t make it as fast and smooth as the most advanced flagships. But this is something I really have to test with benchmarks and a couple of models.
This MIUI 13 option, called Memory Expansion, is also present in other manufacturers and Android overlays, such as Oppo in ColorOS 12, OnePlus in OxygenOS 12, or Samsung in One UI 4. My colleague Rubens also detailed how Samsung’s RAM Plus feature works. understand more.
