After nearly a full year of silence, details on Sonic Origins have burst, though not from SEGA itself. The game was recently rated in South Korea and then in Australia. Key art for the game is also found through the PSN store.
Thanks to our friends at VGC, we now have more details on the game itself via early PSN listings, along with strong hints of a physical version.
We’ve also seen a possible release date, but can’t verify it at this time. On the Famiboards forum, users mentioned the June 22 release date on the AUS PSN store. However, we later visited the listing ourselves and it currently says “release date to be determined”. It’s unclear if the date was originally visible and has since been removed, or if this is just pure speculation.
Sonic Origins will include two different modes: Classic Mode and Anniversary Mode. Classic Mode will display the game at its native resolution and will include limited lives, just like the original from the 90s.
Meanwhile, Anniversary Mode will give players infinite life and show the game on a new 16:9 widescreen monitor. To be honest, we’re a little disappointed that there doesn’t seem to be a mix-and-match option here; we’d love to play the game in widescreen mode, but everything else from the original is intact. To be clear, though, Sega hasn’t officially announced anything yet, so there’s a good chance that option will be available.
Additionally, the game will include missions that will require players to collect coins. These can then be used in Museum Mode to unlock new content, challenges and special stages. The product description also mentions “new areas to explore”. What this will bring is currently up in the air, but maybe we could see something akin to a hidden palace area. Finally, it seems that the start and end animations for each game have been updated.
For fans of physical media, it sounds like Sonic Origins will also be getting a full boxed version. The PSN listing mentions that owners of PS4 discs can upgrade to the PS5 version of the game, which largely hints that the Switch boxed version will launch at the same time.
Hopefully we’ll get some official details on Sonic Origins soon. Will you pick this up? let us know!
