The 5.4-inch iPhone 13 mini continues to be unpopular with customers, according to March quarter U.S. iPhone sales data shared by Consumer Research Intelligence Partners (CIRP).
Of all the iPhone 13 models, the iPhone 13 mini had the smallest share of sales, accounting for just 3% of total iPhone sales in the quarter. By contrast, other iPhone 13 models are more popular and have the largest share of U.S. sales in years.
All four iPhone 13 models combined accounted for 71% of iPhone sales, with the standard 6.1-inch iPhone 13 accounting for 38% of sales. The iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max weren’t as popular as the iPhone 13, but sold much better than the iPhone 13 mini.
In the same period last year, the iPhone 12 models accounted for 61% of total iPhone sales, so the iPhone 13 models fared better. The iPhone 13 also had the strongest sales of all iPhone models in the March quarter, beating out the iPhone 11 and iPhone 12, which are Apple’s flagship iPhones.
According to CIRP, sales of iPhone 13 models other than the mini were strong as buyers changed their phones more frequently.
After a few years buyers were keeping older phones longer, over the past year, buyers are now keeping older phones for less time. In the March 2022 quarter, 20% of buyers reported using their previous phone for three years or more, compared to 34% in March 2021. In the March 2022 quarter, 47% of buyers had their previous phone two years or more old, compared to 35% in the March 2021 quarter.
Apple’s 5.4-inch iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 13 mini have been relatively underwhelming since their launch, and poor sales suggest most consumers don’t want smaller iPhones.
In 2022, with the launch of the iPhone 14 series, Apple will discontinue the 5.4-inch iPhone size. There will be no iPhone 14 mini, Apple will release the 6.1-inch iPhone 14, 6.1-inch iPhone 14 Pro, 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Max, and 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Pro Max.
