Ah, you can always rely on Devolver Digital for every situation. And this time, Sega is the subject of jokes.
Earlier this week, Sega’s long-awaited Sonic compilation Sonic Origins had an official release date of June 23 after several days of leaks. While some people are excited, it’s hard to ignore the messy pre-order chart that Sega created for the series. Luckily, we’ve got a handy little guide to break it down for you, but we’d also like to know what you think of this odd move by Sega:
However, imagine if you didn’t have this experience. Many people questioned why a compilation of old Sonic games needed a bunch of extra stuff to go along with it. Surely we just want to play the best version of the classic five, with a bunch of quality of life features and everything accessible without a paywall?
Well, let Devolver take this opportunity to tease Sega’s Sonic Origins pre-order chart. In a rather interesting move, the publisher used the opportunity to promote one of its own games, Trek to Yomi.
Our marketing department has put together a handy guide for booking Trek to Yomi.

While things like bonus animations and letterbox backgrounds are locked for pre-order (or as early access bonuses if you pre-ordered the special edition), when Devolver puts “full credits at the end” and “great soundtrack” in their in his own spoof chart. Can you imagine if the developers locked the final credit behind a paywall? Although there are many games with “true endings” that require you to choose and pay for additional DLC.
Our friends at Eurogamer have contacted Sega about their pre-order bonus. Given the backlash and confusion it caused, Sega may need to rethink things. But at least, Devolver made us laugh for a while.
