According to recent leaks, Samsung could integrate a 108 MP lens into the photo module of its next-generation Galaxy Z Fold 4. As such, Samsung’s foldable smartphone could benefit from the same photo module as the Galaxy S22 Ultra. But is this really good news?
The rumor was started by leaker Dohyun Kim on Twitter in early April, but it was not reported by the tech media until recently. This very incomplete tweet only mentions the “Galaxy Z Fold4 108MP camera” and nothing more. It can be said that the essence or origin of this leak did not break Ming Jingguo’s three legs.

But that’s when another leaker’s nickname Spring Girl 8888 In response to Dohyun Kim’s post, he explained that aside from the periscope sensor, the Galaxy Z Fold 4 will benefit from the same photo configuration as the Galaxy S22 Ultra. In other words, the 108 MP lens will be the Samsung Isocell HM3.The lens is based on a 1/1.33″ sensor and 0.8 µm pixels.
The Samsung Isocell HM3 also offers 9-in-1 pixel binning to reduce the sharpness of the lens to combine the light perceived by adjacent pixels (pixels are actually 2.4 µm). With Isocell 2.0 technology, the HM3 sensor can dynamically redefine the function of each pixel to suit different lighting conditions, as well as supersampling, which combines pixels from multiple photos to reduce noise.
Anyway, on paper, it’s a clear improvement over the outdated Galaxy Z Fold 3’s 12+12+12 MP triple-camera module. The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra with this lens did very well in our last photo blind test. It remains to be seen how Samsung will find room for this larger sensor in its next-generation foldable smartphone.
Do you think the Galaxy Z Fold 4 is worth the photo upgrade from the previous generation? Or is the classic 3×12 MP combo enough? Does this kind of detail really matter for a smartphone that hardly anyone can afford?
