Sony makes some of the best noise-cancelling headphones on the market. The company’s current flagship headphones, the Sony WH-1000XM4, have won accolades for delivering top-notch ANC, amazing sound quality, and long battery life. Rumor has it that the Japanese electronics giant is gearing up to launch the WH-1000XM5, and today, a new leak gives us our first look at the upcoming earphones.
Technology News Shared high-quality press renderings of the Sony WH-1000XM5, showing the overall design of the headset vividly. While the WH-1000XM4 looks identical to its predecessor, for the most part, the WH-1000XM5 has some notable changes. As you can see in the attached image, the WH-1000XM5 features an updated design that looks cleaner and more minimalistic than previous models.
The earpads appear larger, and the headband’s padding is thicker, so the new model should be more comfortable to wear. The on/off switch appears to have been replaced by a slider, and the “Custom” button has been renamed “NC/Ambient” – which is exactly what it looks like on the WH-1000XM3. According to the leak, the earphones will be available in at least two colors: black and silver.
Now let’s talk about specs and features.according to Technology News, the Sony WH-1000XM5 will offer up to 40 hours of ANC battery life, 10 hours more than the WH-1000XM4. However, the charging time has increased slightly; the headset reportedly takes 3.5 hours to fully charge. We can also expect some notable improvements in ANC performance, as we’re told the new model uses two dedicated chips and three microphones for noise cancellation. Elsewhere, the headset supports Bluetooth 5.2 connectivity, with a 3.5mm audio jack and a USB Type-C connector.
There’s no word on a release date or pricing for the Sony WH-1000XM5. Again, Sony hasn’t officially confirmed anything about the headset.
