Your first guess may be correct due to lack of options
Android 13 is still in development (because we’re impatiently waiting for Beta 1 to finally land), but even though its stable version is still a few months away, things are starting to be ready for further Android releases. One question we’ve been discussing for a while is which sweet spot starting with the letter U might be chosen as the development codename for Android 14 — and there aren’t many obvious U names to choose from. Today we finally got the answer, with Android 14 codenamed Upside Down Cake.
Google has officially clarified the codenames in some notes recently added to AOSP (spotted by 9to5Google). Honestly, this is the first U-dessert that comes to our mind, and when Android 13’s Tiramisu name is confirmed, it’s mentioned as a possible option. Even though getting our U from “upside down” feels a bit like cheating, it’s not like there are many other obvious options. If our dessert menu starts to go international, it might start to open up a bit, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see Google eventually move in that direction.

The dessert name used to be a more prominent part of new Android releases, and you’ll still hear old users lovingly refer to past releases like Lollipop or ICS. Even if we’re not talking about the dessert itself, its letters are still common: Android M, or Android Q. But with the launch of Android 10 in 2019, Google took a step back from that Lenovo and instead embraced the digital version as the preferred way to talk about Android.
The shift does make sense — it’s clean, accessible, and sounds more professional — but for those of us who crave more “fun” days in Android development, at least dessert continues as an internal codename exist.
Android 15 is still a long way off, but does anyone want to bet on what our V name might be? Could the original stuff be obvious, or will Google take us in a new direction? Your guess is as good as ours.
