How to teach Alexa to pronounce your name correctly
First, you need the Alexa app on your smartphone. You must have used it to configure your Echo speaker, but if you change smartphones in the meantime, you can download it again for free for Android and iOS. Next, log into the app and go to settings. Then follow these steps:
- Press the “more“
- Access SettingsAlexa app
- choose”My profile and my family“
- Tap your profile or the profile whose pronunciation you want to adjust
- at the top select “Change name and pronunciation“
- Select a saved pronunciation (at the bottom of the screen)
- Listen to the incorrect pronunciation again
- choose”Adjustment“.
- Here you can choose one of three options or enter the desired pronunciation
Entering pronunciations can be a little tricky because Alexa recognizes certain phrases as abbreviations. For example, in my name “Ben-jah-min”, “min” is pronounced “minute”. This is clearly wrong, unless my parents have been hiding my name from “Benjaminute” for almost 30 years.
You can also modify the pronunciation of each profile in the Alexa family. I see great potential here for a birthday or April 1st to make his family smile with a completely mispronounced name.
