Apple HomeKit: How to Add Devices from Your iPhone to Your Connected Home

If you’re rooted in the Apple ecosystem, you know and even use the Home app to integrate your devices into your smart home. If not, learn how to add Apple HomeKit accessories to your home from your iPhone or iPad in this tutorial.

What is Apple HomeKit?

In response to Amazon Alexa and Google Home, Apple created the HomeKit platform to manage all the connected devices in your home. Although the company is a latecomer to the connected home world, the Home app is comprehensive and offers many automation options.

Today, more and more connected devices are compatible with Apple’s HomeKit platform, such as connected lighting systems, surveillance cameras, connected speakers, connected doorbells, best thermostats, connected outlets, etc. If you have one that works with HomeKit Using a connected device, the first step is to use your iPhone or iPad to add accessories to HomeKit.

How to add HomeKit accessories to your home from your iPhone

I gave up on HomeKit as I got used to Amazon and Google’s connected hubs. However, Apple’s smart home solutions are very convenient for iPhone users, so the transition is inevitable.

On your smartphone, make sure the Home app is installed to start integrating connected accessories. If not, you can download the Home app from the App Store. Once done, make sure your accessories are connected and nearby. Then just follow these steps:

  1. Openhome application on your iPhone (or iPad)
  2. on the page my homePress Add attachment widget (if you have never set up a connected device before) or inicon “+” in the upper right corner of the screen, then press Add accessories
  3. From the context menu, select the attachment to add to my home
  4. Here, accessories can be added via a QR code reader or NFC technology. do this, Find the HomeKit setup code on the accessoryon the installation manual or its box, and Data entry using the iPhone camera. You can also manually add configuration codes by clicking More options
  5. After scanning, the accessory will connect to my home (this may take a few minutes)
  6. A new context menu with location configuration will appear on the screen.Select the room where the accessory is located, click continue
  7. Add a custom name to the prop (or keep the default name) and click continue
  8. Your accessories are now added to the Home app and can now be controlled from your iPhone, iPad, HomePod and Apple TV (4th generation or later)

Now that your connected device has been added to HomeKit, you’ll be able to check relevant information about it, such as remaining battery life and firmware version, control it remotely, and most importantly, automate accessories to do what you want them to do. , when you want.

In addition to the Home app, you can quickly access your accessories from the Control Center on your iPhone or Apple Watch.
