Google is finally rolling out its passwords. This new security key option makes your Google Account even more secure. In this tutorial, we explain everything you need to know about Google Key and how it works.

Yesterday I received an email from Google telling me that I can now access my account using the key:

We inform you that from May 3, 2023 We will integrate support for keys into Google Accounts. […] Support for keys will be built in as they are easier to use and more secure than most other forms of 2-SV.

I took the time to configure my Google account to use this authentication technology called Passkeys with my Gmail. In this article, I’ll outline why you should start using it as soon as possible.

I’ll also walk you through the benefits of this feature and the steps to set it up so you can improve the security of your device.

What are keys and how do they work?

Before Google embraced the concept, Apple made passwords a web trend last year by introducing them in iOS 16 and macOS Ventura. But so far, Apple hasn’t rolled out the feature.

Regardless, the great thing about this security tool is that it lets you log into apps and websites without having to remember or enter passwords.

Say goodbye to storing passwords in apps or documents. We’ve already discussed the security benefits of keys, and I encourage you to learn more.

The key concept of this solution is to use a security key instead of a password for login. Password technology uses biometric readings, such as Face ID, Touch ID, or device passcodes, to verify your identity and ensure secure access.

How to use a secret key to authenticate yourself on your Google account?

To use Passkey, you need a Google Account and a device that supports biometric authentication, such as your fingerprint, face, or screen lock.

It’s important to note that at the time of writing, Google does not provide keys for enterprise accounts. With that in mind, here are the steps to set up and use a key with Google services:

  1. access your google account from any Google app or Click here
  2. activate option ignore passwords as much as possible in your account

Finish! Now you don’t need to enter a password to log into your account, or choose a smartphone as your failsafe key. Great, isn’t it?

Note that the key is securely stored in your Google account and automatically synced to all your devices. This means you can use them to sign in to Google apps and services on any of your devices without having to manually enter a password.

However, I ran into some errors. On my iPhone, I get an error message every time I click to verify my passcode; hopefully this is just a temporary issue.

According to Google, this authentication method works on all devices where the key is saved, including any Android smartphone you log into.

Finally, I also want to share with you a website where you can find services that support keys. Click here to access it.

How do you store passwords? Are you already using key features to protect your data? What do you think about passwords?
