On Android or iOS, Google Assistant, Alexa or Siri can be configured to automate certain tasks in your morning routine. For example, you can check the weather, listen to the latest news, and even prepare coffee with one trick. Learn how to use Google Assistant, Alexa or Siri to automate your morning routine.
While I’m still using the iPhone 13 Mini, I’ve been an Android user for years. I happily used the “Ok Google, hello” voice command. This sparked a series of actions, including reading about my upcoming appointments, the latest news, and the current weather.
However, this feature is only a small part of the possibilities for automating your morning routine. In fact, all modern voice assistants allow you to define your actions via voice commands in the morning. These functions may vary, but actually do exactly the same thing.
How to Automate Your Morning Routine on Your iPhone
On iOS, you’ll need to use the Shortcuts app, which is preinstalled on your iPhone. You also need to enable Siri. In this application you will be able to create a new shortcut via the plus sign in the upper right corner and name it whatever you like. Then you have to add certain actions to this shortcut, here are some possibilities to inspire you:
- View Calendar Events
- Check the weather forecast
- View working hours
- Open the Stocks app
- View Health Report
- Listen to music on Spotify
The possibilities Apple offers are so many. Especially if you’ve developed your connected home a bit. For example, if you use a smart plug on your coffee maker, you can just turn it on in the morning. If you have your coffee maker ready and it works with the switch, the device will start making coffee for you as soon as you wake up.

You can trigger this routine with a voice command or give it a start time. Again, iOS is so complete that you can even automate certain actions when your iPhone detects the sound of a doorbell.
How to Automate Your Morning Routine on Your Android Smartphone
On your Android smartphone, the Apple equivalent of shortcut commands is called Routines. You’ll find them in the Google Home app, and the principles are very similar. Start by opening the Google Home app, then go to Routines and select the routine you want to edit. Here you will be able to set the command “Ok Google, hello” as a trigger and then set the following actions:
- Turn off silent mode on your smartphone
- Turn on the lights
- Control Your Smart Home Thermostat
- Read aloud about weather, routes, reminders, and calendars
- play music
- start radio station
If you’re using the connected speaker as an alarm clock, or at least if you have a speaker in your bedroom, these features are certainly a lot of fun. So you won’t be relying on your smartphone in the morning.
How to Automate Your Morning Routine with Alexa
With Amazon’s Alexa, the features you’re looking for are called “Routines,” and can be found in the Alexa app for iOS or Android. Even though you set up voice commands in your smartphone’s app, those programs are still available to every Echo speaker in your apartment. You’ll go straight to a suggested sequence called “Alexa, start my day.” But with your own configuration you also have more possibilities:
- Use Alexa as an alarm clock
- Read road traffic information on the way to work
- read the message
- Announce current weather
- Turn on the lights
- Open connected shutters
- Send messages to other Echo speakers
- Turn on the power socket to prepare coffee
Routines for Alexa are quick to set up, and you’ll be able to take advantage of Alexa’s vast ecosystem of smart home devices. With a connected weather station, you can even have the current wind speed or temperature communicated to you.
in conclusion
If you haven’t used a smart home setup to automate your morning routine, you’re really missing out! In fact, with routines, shortcuts, or processes, you can trigger a series of useful actions through automation or voice commands. When your brain and body wake up, your connected home will meet your basic needs or provide you with important information for the day.
