With MIUI, you can make the camera of your Xiaomi or Redmi smartphone more intuitive. You can save the last used mode and prevent your Xiaomi smartphone from resetting it when you close the Photos app.
On any Android smartphone, the Photos app resets when you close it. So, the basic photo mode with the main lens is always turned on in the Photos app by default. On Xiaomi and Redmi, you can force the MIUI 13 Photos app to save the last used photo mode – Portrait, Night, Macro – to have it turned on by default even if you close the app.

Unfortunately, this function only saves the last used mode. For example, you cannot save settings made in pro mode. The zoom level or filter is also reset.

But it’s still very useful, especially if you want to use the special photo mode multiple times. Full resolution (108M), night mode, panorama or other modes are all stored in the “More” pane of the photo carousel. Therefore, the option to save the last used mode saves you from rummaging through the app to find the mode of your choice.
And since I’ve seen you in the comments: yes, you can also simply change the photo mode shown by default in the carousel to add your special fetish mode. But this prompt is mostly one-time, occasional. Like, you’re in the park and want to take macro flowers. That doesn’t mean you want to take macro photos all the time.
