To benefit from a periscope lens on your iPhone, you may have to wait and most importantly keep your hands in your wallet. In any case, that’s what analyst Ming-Chi Kuo revealed, who claims that only the iPhone 15 Pro Max will feature a periscope telephoto lens capable of delivering easy-to-magnify and high-quality photos.
- iPhone 15 Pro Max and its periscope lens should be released in 2023
- The optical zoom of the device can provide x5 magnification
- Apple will be one of the last manufacturers to use a periscope-style camera on its iPhones
We know the photo and video quality of the Apple iPhone. The iPhone’s photo sensor is famous, but the quality of the resulting image is closely tied to the smartphone’s software capabilities.
To date, the iPhone 13 Pro has been able to offer 3x optical zoom and 10x digital zoom. In our testing, we noticed that the quality of photos taken with the iPhone 13 was much lower with digital zoom. The fact that the Galaxy S22 Ultra can zoom up to 100x thanks to its digital zoom surprised us when we only used its periscope lens and 10x optical zoom.

The iPhone 15 Pro Max may not be able to reach the 10x optical zoom of the Galaxy S22 Ultra, but it is “only” capable of 6x optical zoom thanks to the new periscope lens mounted on the back of the smartphone. This is a bit more than the previous rumors. To find out if this is really true, we’ll have to wait until 2023 and the release of the iPhone 15 Pro Max.
Ming-Chi Kuo said the basic and simple Pro versions of the iPhone 15 should not have a periscope zoom. We already saw this in October 2020, where only the iPhone 12 Pro Max benefited from the x2.5 zoom, especially thanks to the larger sensor.
Ming-Chi Kuo even said he knew the name of the manufacturer of the periscope lens on the iPhone 15 Pro Max. It will be the Taiwanese company Largan Precision.
Do you think the iPhone is and will remain the best consumer photo and video smartphone?
