Amazon is working on a very controversial and very scary new AI feature for its Alexa devices and future voice assistant. The company showed off new voice-generating technology on its smart speakers at its MARS conference, with Alexa able to imitate the dead by voice.

While video and audio deepfakes are starting to gain traction, the technology is still somewhat limited to high-end computers or expensive software solutions. That should change in the coming years as more companies offer consumers artificial intelligence capable of performing increasingly surprising functions.

The company claims its technology can process any sound using less than a minute of recording. For example, anyone can generate the voice of a celebrity as long as they have a recorded audio clip. It’s also possible for future users to override Alexa’s default voice.
