The Apple Watch Series 8, expected to arrive later this fall, may disappoint fans. A new article by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman suggests that Apple shouldn’t update the SoC, and therefore keep the SoC for the Apple Watch Series 6 and Watch Series 7.
- Apple Watch Series 8 could keep the same SoC as its predecessor
- On the other hand, new smartwatches may have new designs
- The Apple Watch SE 2 should have a bigger screen.
Apple Watch Series 8: New design, but aging SoC
Equipping this year’s Apple Watch Series 8 with a new SoC doesn’t seem to be a priority for the brand. Smartwatches, on the other hand, will bring noticeable changes in design and health and fitness tracking capabilities. It was also mentioned before that the 8th generation Apple Watch could have a slimmer and sleeker design, which would be a big change.

In terms of performance, the current S7 dual-core processor in the Apple Watch Series 7 is identical to the older S6. The latter process is 20 percent faster than the S5 chip in the Watch Series 5 three years ago. Unsurprisingly, most manufacturers typically introduce a new SoC every few years, unlike smartphones that receive hardware updates every year.
Leaks hint at a low-power mode for Apple’s smartwatch coming this year. This mode will extend the battery life of the watch by pausing background processes and activities. Ultimately, this is the same functionality that is available on smartphones and tablets.
Apple Watch SE 2 will have a bigger screen
Apple may also launch a more affordable Apple Watch SE 2 running watchOS 9. The smartwatch will reportedly have a bigger screen than its predecessor. Both the Watch SE 2 and Watch Series 8 will likely have larger batteries to compensate for the increased screen size.
Other rumored Apple Watch Series 8 features include a new body temperature sensor and possibly higher ATM water resistance. Apple could also improve the emergency SOS service by adding satellite connectivity similar to the upcoming iPhone 14.
