According to a patent purportedly filed by Apple, the Apple brand will work on installing fingerprint readers, such as Touch ID, on its future watches.
- Future Apple Watches may feature Touch ID for added security
- Sensor work requires separate biometric chipset
- Apple is expected to launch a tougher Apple Watch Series 8 later this fall, with a different material case
discoverer apparently apple, the patent comes with a sketch showing a biometric sensor connected to the side buttons of an Apple smartwatch. For now, the location of the button is appropriate, as it’s mostly used for gesture controls and Apple Pay. It became more logical for Apple to integrate Touch ID into the buttons.
If it emerges in the future, sensors could be used for additional security measures, whether when accessing a smartwatch or when making contactless payments. Before integrating a fingerprint reader into its Appe Watch line of smartwatches, Apple needs to solve a problem. A dedicated biometric chip is required for this to work properly.

Following Apple’s approach, it also makes sense that Apple’s next-generation S-series chips will support biometrics. Another scenario is that the screen of a smartwatch may have a fingerprint reader under the screen.

Analyst Mark Gurman also confirmed that a more powerful Apple Watch Series 8 could launch this fall. He speculates that this special edition will feature different materials to withstand harsh conditions. The smartwatch will also feature a larger screen than the current Apple Watch Series 7.
Apple is expected to release the iPhone 14 in a few months. We’ll eventually be able to see if the information about a more durable variant of the Watch Series 8 is verified.
