Call it the perfect storm, but the combination of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and the digital leap triggered by Covid-19 has transformed more than one industry beyond recognition.
The IT sector and related industries are undoubtedly one of the sectors that has achieved positive results, mainly due to the increasing demand for cloud computing across all businesses. The result is a steady stream of new advancements and job opportunities.
That means there’s a lot of talk about a career in cloud computing, and why it’s a safe bet for those looking to secure the future of their career. Cloud computing is expected to remain unchanged as the rest of the tech industry faces a downturn and considers cost-cutting measures such as mass layoffs. The fact that businesses are in the midst of a generational shift from traditional data centers to cloud services means cloud computing skills may still be in demand.
What can you do to take advantage of this active sector? Start by identifying areas of cloud computing where your skills can be easily transferred, then identify gaps where you may need training or development to keep up.
So what do you need to know?
Technology and Platform
Do you know at least one of the three major public cloud systems: Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Cloud Platform (GCP) or Microsoft Azure? It’s great if you have experience with Kubernetes or other containerized software, which is important for developers looking to build and run applications in the cloud. Don’t forget automation. Do you know a puppet or a chef? Knowing the cloud fundamentals and then focusing on a specific area is one way to make sure you stay in demand.
Integrated and multi-cloud environments
Do you know how to integrate different cloud systems or how to integrate cloud systems with existing systems? Cloud architects and their ability to master cloud integration while determining the best way to meet business needs through different cloud solutions is a much-needed skill set. This is a skill that should remain in high demand.
Training and Certification
Your primary IT qualification may not be in the cloud, but in order to advance in the industry there is a constant need for up-to-date training and certification. A good place to start is with three training offerings: AWS Certification, Azure Certification, and Google Cloud Certification. From there, you can view areas you can focus on.
organizational strategy
If Agile, Lean, or Scrum aren’t ringing the alarm bells, then you need to be familiar with these organizational methods. Technological advancements are rapid and frequent, and the old ways of collaborating on teams and projects simply no longer work. Traditional IT standards and roles are being phased out.
Those who want to survive and thrive in the industry must also embrace DevOps theory, a combination of philosophical, practical, and cultural tools that improve an organization’s ability to rapidly deliver applications and services.
