Call of Duty developer Infinity Ward has now confirmed what was widely expected: its new entry in Activision’s long-running shooter franchise will be titled Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.
Yep, it’s the exact same 2009 classic from the same studio – sorry, it’s 13 years old now.
Infinity Ward revealed the name last night via Twitter, and the game’s logo. To me it looks more like MIIW than MWII. Meanwhile, others said it reminded them of Nine Inch Nails.
This new Modern Warfare 2 is the fifth major game in COD’s Modern Warfare subseries. It’s also a sequel to 2019’s Modern Warfare reboot — at least it’s named slightly differently from 2007’s Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare original.
Looking ahead, Activision also announced a new free-to-play Call of Duty Warzone “experience” that will be revealed later this year — although it’s unclear to what extent it’s a sequel or revamp of an existing Warzone .
After that, the series is expected to see an unprecedented breakthrough in 2023, with no new big-budget boxed releases that fall.
Earlier this week, Activision’s new player count revealed that interest in Call of Duty has plummeted over the past 12 months, while the publisher has also been shaken by allegations of its work practices. Meanwhile, the folks at Call of Duty studio Raven Software are continuing their fight to join the union.
