While Samsung will show off the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 during its Unpacked Event on August 10, the new foldable smartphone could change names. In fact, according to a new rumor, Samsung could make big changes after the Ukraine war.
- Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Z Flip 4 can be presented as Galaxy Fold 4 and Galaxy Flip 4
- The reason for the name change is the war in Ukraine
- “Z” is used as a symbol by the Russian military
Leaks and rumors abound shortly before Samsung’s Unpacked-Event on August 10. Most of the time, they focus on the brand’s next-generation foldable smartphones, the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Z Flip 4. Today, leaker SnoopyTech claimed on Twitter that a small detail about the two smartphones could change:
Samsung Electronics is trying to get rid of the “Z” letter in its line of folding phones. As of Flip/Fold 4, letters will no longer be printed on boxes. That’s because the Russian military is using the letter.

Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Z Flip 4: Drop the letter Z from the name because of the war in Ukraine?
The last time we talked about rumors, it was usually about new colors, designs and even new components for Samsung’s upcoming foldable smartphone. But for the first time we’ve heard, even the name of the foldable Galaxy smartphone could change. If the leaker is correct, Samsung will remove the letter “Z” from both models.

This isn’t the first time, as the first Galaxy Fold has been released without the letter “Z” in the name. Samsung then introduced the letter as it visually indicated the foldable nature of the smartphone.
But it would be equally understandable if Samsung were going backwards now. The reason is that the letter “Z” is used by Russian troops in Ukraine, where Putin’s invasion is still raging. The “Z” has long been established as Russia’s anti-Ukrainian symbol, even among Putin’s supporters.
Samsung could pay homage to this development by dropping the letters, and we’d also benefit from a less complicated name. But don’t forget, this is just a temporary rumor, not necessarily true. There are two points in support of this hypothesis:
- Not all Samsung series are named after letters: the Galaxy Note series is without them
- In Ukraine and other Baltic countries, Samsung already removed the Z from packaging in March
Next week, Samsung will unveil not only a new smartwatch, but a new foldable Galaxy as well. What do you think of this possible name change?
