Intel Alder Lake-HX Enthusiast Mobile Platform with PCIe Gen5 and Overclocking
At its Vision event on May 10, Intel will unveil its latest line of processors, codenamed Alder Lake-HX. The series will be the first mobile lineup with 16 cores.
Intel will put the full desktop Alder Lake chip on a BGA package. One of the slides confirms that the BGA package will have the same dimensions (45 x 37.5mm) as the desktop LGA, with the only difference being the height, which is reduced from 4.4mm to 2.0mm.
But Alder Lake-HX is much more than that. This is a new 55-watt “enthusiasm” CPU for high-end gaming and workstation systems. It will have an increased core count, more power, and more PCIe lanes.
Speaking of PCI Express, Alder Lake-HX is the first laptop platform to support PCIe Gen5. Additionally, it has a total of 48 PCIe lanes (Gen5 x16 + Gen4 x20 + Gen3 x 12). This is an increase over Alder Lake-H (Gen4 x16 + Gen3 x12).
Alder Lake-HX is about overclocking. It supports DDR5 with XMP 3.0 profile and a new feature called dynamic memory acceleration. In addition, the series supports efficient core overclocking, updated Intel Speed Optimizer and Extreme Tuning Utility. What’s more, Intel claims that all HX SKUs support overclocking.

The specifications of the series have not changed from the rumored ones. We’re working on a 16 core boost to 5.0 GHz for at least two SKUs. All HX CPUs have the same 55W base power and a boost power limit of up to 157W, an increase of 42W over the Alder Lake-H series.
Also, since the new CPU is based on a desktop chip, the number of GPU cores has been reduced to 32 or 16, depending on the variant. We don’t know of any systems with only HX CPUs, as all gaming/workstation laptops with these CPUs have dedicated GPUs.
