Not only did watchOS 9 and iOS 16 see major changes, Apple also surprised the public during WWDC 2022 with its reinvented CarPlay. If it’s going to be a while before it’s compatible with vehicles, the announcement of a future CarPlay feature seems like a major improvement worth patience.
- Apple’s future embedded software will support multiple screens
- CarPlay and its new features will be available in 2 years
Integrated speedometer, multi-screen and more
The biggest change in future versions of CarPlay is the multi-screen capability. In the current version, Apple’s in-vehicle platform only supports the center instrument panel display. That will change with the next generation of CarPlay, which will change the instrument cluster that supports the vehicle.

Once connected, CarPlay will provide features such as climate or climate control, navigation, driving modes, integrated instrument clusters such as the speedometer, and more. Various widget options are also available. It’s safe to say that all of these elements will be customizable and add new features when the full version of CarPlay is released.
Additionally, Apple has also introduced a new CarPlay feature in iOS 16. iPhones running iOS 16 should be able to store fuel and driving-related data and tasks in CarPlay, while messaging features will receive updates along with an expanded Podcasts library app.
Which vehicles are compatible with the next-generation CarPlay system?
Many automakers are already partners with Apple and include CarPlay in their vehicles. We especially think of Honda, Ford, Nissan, Volvo, Audi, Land Rover, Mercedes-Benz, Peugeot, Fiat, and more. The only model Apple has mentioned so far is Volvo’s Polestar 2 electric car.
Toyota and power giant Tesla may or may not support Apple’s in-vehicle ecosystem. By launching Project Titan in 2014, the Cupertino company has shown interest in building electric vehicles and alienated some manufacturers.
