Almost every industry is feeling the effects of climate change, and one is sports and athletic apparel products, as it changes the way athletes train and perform in a variety of conditions. So Nike was challenged to adopt more circular design principles in order to produce removable shoes without using any glue or cement. By making a sneaker that doesn’t require both, it leaves room for the shoe to easily separate at the end of its useful life, which in turn is easier to break down into recyclable waste and leaves a smaller carbon footprint. This season, Nike is proud to present its solution in two styles – the Nike ISPA Link and the Nike ISPA Link Axis.
Both styles are manufactured with a mid-cut so that you can separate the top section from the sole unit. Various parts of the base are made from eco-friendly materials, including a Flyknit upper made from 100% recycled polyester and a TPU cage made from 20% recycled material. Underneath, the spherical midsole is crafted from TPU tooling, 100% recycled from Nike airbag scrap, and the EVA footbed is designed with 10% recycled material. Additional elements to look out for include Swoosh branding, which appears on the lateral heel, toe box and bottom center, as well as a grid pattern that adorns the various sole pods.
Expect the Nike ISPA Link to be released in the coming months, with the Nike ISPA Link Axis set to debut in 2023.
