Variable refresh rate, or VRR for short, has been a much-desired feature for many PlayStation 5 owners since the console’s launch. The good news is that it finally happened. Sony announced that it will support VRR with a PS5 update this week. A handful of games will be updated specifically to take advantage of the feature, although you can toggle the option to apply it to “unsupported” games as well.
With that in mind, Sony says the following games will be updated “in the coming weeks”:
Not the biggest option, is it? But it should be reiterated that you can still enable VRR all Through the PS5’s system settings, your number of games – just the patches for the games listed will allow for “the best VRR experience”.
If you’re having any issues with unsupported games, just disable it in your console’s settings like this:

If you’re sitting around wondering what VRR actually is, here’s a short explanation from the official PlayStation Blog: “VRR dynamically syncs the display’s refresh rate to the PS5 console’s graphics output. This enhances PS5 gameplay by minimizing or eliminating visual performance”
Basically, VRR can make your games perform better – but you’ll need to make sure you have an HDMI 2.1 VRR-compatible TV or PC monitor for it to work.
Sony also emphasizes that enabling VRR doesn’t guarantee a performance boost — unless the game receives a specific patch, as described above.
