Realme just announced the Realme 9, Realme 9 5G and Realme Pad Mini, two new mid-range smartphones and new compact tablets. The Realme 9 5G offers a Snapdragon 695 and a 120Hz screen for less than 260 euros.
- Realme announces two new smartphones and a tablet
- Realme 9 and 9 5G are completely different
- The Realme Pad Mini is an affordable 8.7-inch tablet with optional 4G.
Although they come from the same family and have the same name, the Realme 9 and 9 5G are completely different. JJ Kwan, head of global product marketing at Realme, explained that the company tries to balance the value and cost of each component, while working towards the range’s goal of delivering “a flagship product with a premium design.”
The result is that the Realme 9 5G has to make some concessions to offer such a competitive price despite having a more modern and 5G-ready SoC.

For those who don’t need or want 5G, the Realme 9 is a compelling sub-$300 smartphone. The mid-range smartphone is powered by the Snapdragon 680 SoC with 6 or 8 GB of RAM and features a 6.4-inch Super AMOLED screen with 90 Hz refresh rate and FHD+ resolution.
Camera-wise, Realme has been offering a 108MP camera for a while. So the 2022 series brings high-resolution cameras to the non-Pro models. As such, both variants share the same photo module, adding an 8 MP ultra-wide-angle camera and a 2 MP macro lens. As we saw in our Realme 9 Pro+ review, the main camera produces pretty good results, but don’t expect too much from the other cameras.
Another of Realme’s strong points is its fast charging, and the Realme 9 doesn’t disappoint. While not offering class-leading fast charging, the Realme 9 is compatible with 33W Dart Charge, and the charger is in the box, especially unlike Samsung’s competitors.

If you’d like to see the Realme 9 5G offer similar specs to the 4G model, think again. The difference starts with the screen, the Realme 5G uses a larger 6.6-inch LCD screen with FHD+ resolution but a 120Hz refresh rate. The battery capacity has increased and is 5000 mAh like the Realme 9. Charging, on the other hand, has sacrificed a bit, with wired charging at just 18W.
Even memory options come at a price for 5G compatibility, with the Realme 9 5G only offering 4GB of RAM and 64GB and 128GB storage options, the latter of which is exclusive to Germany in Europe. Finally, the photo module is also less efficient, offering a 50 MP main camera and a pair of 2 MP sensors, one for macro and the other for depth of field.

Note that the global version of the Realme 9 5G should not be confused with the version of the same name released in India. This smartphone is also completely different, with a smaller screen, lower refresh rate, MediaTek SoC, lower-resolution main camera and even a different OS version.
