As you may have heard over the past few weeks, Nintendo of America has come under fire for its alleged treatment of part-time and contract workers. NoA actually responded to one of the complaints, noting how the video game giant is “completely committed” to providing a welcoming and supportive environment for employees and contractors, mentioning how it takes employment issues very seriously.
Still, behind-the-scenes dissatisfaction is reportedly growing, and now former Nintendo of America president Reggie Fels-Aime has shared his thoughts on the alleged union issue in an interview with The Washington Post. He said it was not the company he knew, nor the Nintendo he left.
Here’s the full rundown (via Nintendo Everything):
“I did read that story. Then again, at this point, I’m three years away from being president of Nintendo of America. It’s been a while. As I read the stories and reports, it suddenly dawned on me that this wasn’t the Nintendo I left. I mean, when I was at Nintendo, we used to have meetings and events where our coworkers — that’s what we call contract employees — were invited. Famous for having lunch with employees – it’s a basic sign-up. And invite employees to sign up just like full-time employees. We don’t differentiate. The reports I’ve heard really make me feel like it’s not the company I know. I’ll just let it go .
“My core focus when I was at Nintendo of America was building a healthy culture within the company, and I knew I could do that. Of course, what was being described didn’t seem like a healthy culture.”
As Reggie said, he has now been out of the company for over three years. When he hosts the show, though – he’s known for having lunch with colleagues and employees and trying to maintain a “healthy culture”. This is in stark contrast to some of the reports appearing online.
