The latest update to version 4.13 of the Stadia app points to game-specific touchscreen controls and prompts for 1440p streaming on Android.
About APK Insights: In this “APK Insight” post, we decompiled the latest version of the app that Google uploaded to the Play Store. When we decompiled these files (called APKs in Android apps), we were able to see various lines of code hinting at possible future features. Keep in mind that Google may or may not release these features, and our interpretation of them may not be complete. However, we will try to make those near-finished products to show you how they will look when shipped. With that in mind, read on.
Game-specific touch
In the last few updates to Stadia, Google has been working on an “enterprise” feature that goes hand in hand with the rework of the touchscreen gamepad that Stadia offers when you don’t have a controller connected. With Stadia 4.13, now available through the Play Store, Google is giving touch games the best look yet with new “enterprise” touch buttons.
Unlike the usual button designs shown in previous iterations of touch controls, these buttons have Purpose Instead display. For example, instead of showing the A button, you’ll see a graphic of a person jumping. Looking at the other included examples, we see that L1 is a grenade, Y is a pistol, and R2 is a bullet.
Judging by the icons used alone, this appears to be a standard control layout for first-person shooters. Combined with previous clues from developer custom controls, we believe this is our first example of using Stadia game-specific touch controls. Having said that, we believe the exact buttons seen above are meant to show what’s possible, not the control schemes that will be used in real games in the near future.
This matches Xbox Game Pass streamers’ efforts to create unique and stylized touchscreen controls for supported games or simply hide controls that aren’t used by specific games.
1440p streaming?
When playing Stadia games on a desktop/laptop, if you have a Stadia Pro and a monitor greater than 1440p but less than 4K, the web app can automatically stream in native 1440p resolution. On Android, however, there’s no option to stream anything higher than 1080p, although there are even 4K-capable phones like in the Sony Xperia line.
In Stadia 4.13, “UPTO_1440P” has been added to the code, which may indicate progress in delivering higher resolutions through the mobile app. Such an addition is perfect for the Pixel 6 Pro, which offers a native 1440p display. That said, it’s also possible that this code could be used by Stadia’s Android TV app, which could theoretically also make good use of slightly higher resolutions.
odds and ends
There are also some smaller projects in the Stadia app in the works. First, Google will continue to revise the word “free” in relation to Stadia Pro, changing it to “free” or “no additional cost.” Nothing has changed for Stadia Pro subscribers, but it does make Google’s wording more accurate.

Elsewhere, we found that Stadia has started integrating a pair of new Flutter plugins, one for accessing files on the device and another for playing videos. So far, Stadia’s in-app capture player doesn’t appear to be affected by the changes.
