Take-Two Interactive admits that profits have fallen sharply over the past 12 months after posting best-ever figures for the 2020-2021 fiscal year. With an operating result of EUR 454 million, we remained the second largest profit in Take-Two Interactive’s history, while turnover set a new record of EUR 3.3 billion.
The largest contributors to this exercise are NBA 2K22, NBA 2K21, Grand Theft Auto V, Grand Theft Auto Online, Red Dead Redemption 2, Red Dead Online, Grand Theft Auto: Trilogy – Definitive Edition, Borderlands 3. Little Tina’s Wonderland and Two Points Mobile Game. A key point of Take-Two Interactive’s business model is a further increase in player recurring investment (money spent on games such as NBA 2K and GTA Online), which accounts for 65% of total revenue.
Management said they were pleased with the launch of Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands and the revival of WWE 2K22, as was Red Dead Redemption 2. Recall that wrestling hit rock bottom in 2020 and then took another year to rebuild. As a result, WWE 2K22 achieved the best release of the series in the United States. However, Take-Two Interactive admits that player recurring investment has declined in the first few months of the year, whether due to intense competition or the end of the limiting effect.

The release of Grand Theft Auto 5 on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox series won’t be slowing down. As a result, the game continued its small quarterly run and added 5 million copies, now reaching 165 million worldwide distribution (375 million for the franchise). Grand Theft Auto 5 is the best-selling game in the US over the past 10 years, both in volume and dollars. Another Rockstar Games mainstay, Red Dead Redemption 2, sold an additional 1 million copies between January and March, bringing its total to 44 million (67 million for the franchise).
Meanwhile, Borderlands 3 has surpassed 15 million copies since its launch and contributed to the series’ impressive total sales: 75 million, surpassing Civilization (61 million) and Bioshock (39 million copies). NBA 2K22 passed the 10 million mark for its predecessor, and the series has now sold 123 million games. PGA Tour 2K21 has sold 3 million copies worldwide and has become the third best-selling golf game in US history.
Kerbal Space Program 2 takeoff further delayed
In the new fiscal year, Take-Two Interactive expects a record turnover of at least 3.5 billion euros, while net profit declines by around 230 million euros. Those goals don’t take into account the acquisition of Zynga, even though it should close on May 23, 2022.
Referring only to games that have already been announced, the schedule for this fiscal year includes The Quarry (June 10, 2022), Marvel’s Midnight Sun, NBA 2K23, WWE 2K23, PGA Tour 2K23 and Gearbox’s ongoing development Legend of the Lord’s Land. In terms of delays, GTA: Trilogy – Definitive Edition on iOS and Android is still waiting for a release date, with Kerbal Space Program 2 now expected for PC in early 2023 (and on consoles later in 2023). The game’s creative director has released a message to players, knowing rumors that the sequel was originally aimed at a 2020 release.
Overall, Take-Two Interactive plans to release 18 new games between April 2022 and March 2023. There are no less than 8 mobile games among them, knowing that Zynga’s new release is still not taken into account. And since the ball issue is bound to fall through the middle of the results presentation, no, Take-Two has no intention of offering FIFA’s license and picking up Electronic Arts on its tight turf. “We are obviously interested in expanding our opportunities in sports, FIFA is a great brand with incredible reach, but we have no plans to discuss at this time“, replied CEO Strauss Zelnick. Remember the FIFA boss, who said EA Sports FC’s rivals will be available from 2024.
