A new phase in the artistic dimension of video games, the integration of a genre focused on the field’s music with the Grammy’s interactive work category is a trifle in itself. logically named “Best soundtracks for video games and other interactive media“, the category is described as:”Celebrating the excellence of an album of soundtracks consisting primarily of original scores, designed for or as accompaniment, to current video games or other interactive media released during the selected period. “At the time of writing these lines, the selection is still in progress and will close on October 23.
Then you’ll have to wait until November 15th to know the list of selected soundtracks. Currently, 70 pieces that have tried their luck are well known: Elden Ring Apparently (Yuka Kitamura, Yoshimi Kudo, Shoi Miyazawa, Tsukasa Saitoh and Tai Tomisawa), and Tunic (Janice Kwan and Terence Lee), or Horizon Forbidden West (Joris De Man, Niels van der Leest, Oleksa Lozowchuk, The Flight). Don’t forget Stephen Barton and Gordy Huber working on MultiVersus after they worked for Jedi Fallen Order, and don’t forget Austin Ventory, who introduced him to Alien: Fire Team Elite. Knowing in advance who will be selected is of course complicated, and BAFTA can already provide some clues. Whether it’s Returnal (Bobby Krlic, Joe Thwaites, and Harry Krueger), the big winner from last year’s ceremony, or various nominees like Halo Infinite (Gareth Coker, Joel Corelitz, and Curtis Schweitzer).
But we can’t forget composers like Bear McCreary (God of War) or Stephanie Economou (Assassin’s Creed Valhalla: Ragnarok), whose fame transcended video games because they simultaneously worked in film. Regardless, the successful OST will only be revealed at the Grammy Awards Gala on February 5, 2023.
